ArcelorMittal is evaluating a second electric arc furnace at its Calvert facility in Alabama. This follows the successful ramp-up of its first EAF, which will reach full operational capacity in late 2026. CFO Genuino Cristino noted that the expansion aims to deepen domestic production capabilities and reduce reliance on imported steel slabs.


Expanding US Flat Steel Production

The new furnace follows the June 2025 launch of the plant’s first EAF. That initial unit produces specialized grades for automotive body panels. Management states that expanding local EAF capacity strengthens supply chain resilience. It also secures high-demand flat steel output for North America, where the Calvert plant maintains an annual capacity of 5.3 million tonnes.


Strategic Shift Amid Lower Global Output

This consideration for extra domestic melting capacity matches a broader portfolio adjustment by the global steel producer. During the first half of 2026, ArcelorMittal reported a 5.5% year-on-year drop in total steel output to 27.6 million tonnes. Product deliveries fell by 4.3% during the same period. Investing in regional, lower-carbon EAF assets aligns with the company’s strategy to optimize operating footprints and meet stringent regional standards.
