Central Mining Modernizes Conveyor Gearboxes for Enhanced Performance

Central Mining and Processing Plant has accelerated its modernization program by replacing aging conveyor gearboxes with advanced SEW-EURODRIVE equipment. This upgrade aims to prevent emergency shutdowns and maintain consistent production flow. Over the last two years, the plant focused on overhauling main and auxiliary gearboxes, starting with the K-2 main conveyor, a critical transport line in the facility. The replacement of outdated components improves operational reliability and ensures worker safety, essential for maintaining production stability.

Anton Milkevich, deputy head of the engineering department, emphasized the significance of installing a new European-made drive system on the M-1 conveyor. This conveyor plays a vital role in moving ore between the second and third crushing stages. The new gearbox’s advanced design offers greater power and reliability, enhancing the plant’s crushing capabilities while simplifying maintenance.

Conveyor Gearbox Replacement Program and Impact on Crushing Plant Efficiency

The updated gearboxes bring notable improvements in weight and performance. Chief mechanic Sergiy Mokhtan highlighted that the new gearbox weighs only five tons, compared to the old 15-ton set. This reduction drastically simplifies installation and ongoing maintenance efforts. The plant has scheduled the final gearbox replacement for 2026, completing the renewal of all five critical conveyor units.

Central Mining’s modernization program aligns with its strategic goal to increase production efficiency and operational safety. In the past year, the plant achieved nearly 100% capacity utilization, with the Kolachevsky Mine reaching its planned productivity. Furthermore, the company is actively reducing energy consumption and production costs by implementing innovative, energy-efficient technologies, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable mining practices.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:

Central Mining’s conveyor gearbox upgrades represent a strategic step in modernizing critical mining infrastructure. By collaborating with SEW-EURODRIVE, the plant not only improves operational reliability but also reduces maintenance complexity and energy consumption. These enhancements position Central Mining to sustain higher production rates while ensuring personnel safety. The emphasis on energy-efficient solutions also reflects broader industry trends toward sustainability and cost control. Other mining operations can draw valuable lessons from this comprehensive approach to equipment modernization and operational excellence.
