Chile’s state copper commission, Cochilco, has sharply downgraded its national output outlook. It also raised price projections, highlighting a deepening supply crunch in the global copper market.
The latest data reveals that mining disruptions, lower ore grades, and operational constraints are severely limiting recovery. With production hitting multi-year lows in South America, global buyers face persistent cost pressures amid thin market surpluses.
Output Reductions Deepen National Production Slump
Cochilco slashed its 2026 Chilean copper output forecast to 4.94 million metric tons. This represents an 8.4% drop compared to earlier projections.
Major industrial assets, including BHP’s Escondida mine and state-run Codelco operations, account for over 77% of the national volume decline. Analysts point out that lower ore grades at aging deposits, scheduled maintenance, and lingering interruptions have constrained processing recovery rates. Year-to-date data shows production volumes sliding significantly. Consequently, the recovery trajectory into 2027 appears much slower than market participants initially anticipated.
Upward Pressure on Global Price Forecasts
Reflecting this tightening market, Cochilco raised its average price forecast to $6.18 per pound for 2026. It set the 2027 forecast at $5.95 per pound.
These revisions underscore a market with virtually no buffer to absorb unexpected supply shocks. Refined copper surpluses are estimated at thin margins of less than 1% of total global consumption. Physical tightness is visible through localized inventory drawdowns and elevated delivery premiums. While artificial intelligence infrastructure fuels robust demand, traditional sectors like construction remain sluggish.
Supply Chain Strategy for Industrial Buyers
For procurement managers and metal traders, the widening deficit risk requires a proactive approach to inventory management. With physical availability restricted by output contractions, buyers face short-term price volatility. Supply chain professionals should review long-term hedging strategies and diversify sourcing origins to mitigate multi-year exposure to South American production bottlenecks.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:
Chile’s worsening production outlook cements a structural shift toward higher baseline copper pricing over the next two years. As aging asset grades collide with sluggish recovery timelines, the global market loses its traditional supply cushion, leaving industrial buyers vulnerable to any sudden demand spikes.
