Copper Price Clinches Weekly Gain as Chinese Demand Signals Strengthen
Copper Price

Copper prices finished the week on firm ground. Prices recovered from earlier pullbacks as strong Chinese demand signals boosted market confidence. The metal rose 1.6% on Friday to settle at $14,540 per ton on the London Metal Exchange. This secured a 2% gain for the week.

Chinese Inventory Drawdowns and Import Demand

Physical copper markets draw solid support from Asian consumption hubs. Inventories in China remain low following a major national holiday. Meanwhile, key gauges of import demand reached a four-year high. These figures show active restocking by Chinese buyers.

Global trade flows also faced regional tightening. Large volumes of copper shifted toward the United States ahead of potential tariff changes. This flow drained metal availability in other regional markets.

South American Mine Supply Risks and Macro Headwinds

Supply risks remain a central market focus. A strike at Antofagasta’s Centinela mine in Chile entered its third day. Unions warned that production could drop within weeks if talks fail. However, the company kept its output forecast unchanged.

Macroeconomic conditions present a mixed backdrop. Equity markets rallied on earnings optimism. Still, high oil prices and rising Treasury yields created headwinds. Even so, supply risks and Asian demand provide a solid floor for prices.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:

Copper’s resilience in the face of macroeconomic headwinds highlights the fundamental tightness in the physical market. With Chinese import demand hitting multi-year highs and labor disputes threatening South American output, supply-side vulnerabilities continue to provide a robust price floor despite broader financial market volatility.
