European Scrap Market Faces Pressure

European Scrap Market Faces Pressure
European scrap market

The European scrap market experienced a downturn in July. This trend resulted from seasonal maintenance shutdowns, severe logistical bottlenecks, and soaring freight rates.

Seasonal Maintenance and Logistical Disruptions

The European scrap metal market faced intense dual pressures in July. Reduced demand from seasonal maintenance shutdowns at regional steelworks drove this trend. An acute logistics crisis also impacted the sector. Scrap prices dropped by €20 to €25 per tonne on average across Germany. Neighboring nations like Luxembourg, Italy, Poland, and the Czech Republic saw similar declines. Concurrently, severe droughts caused critically low water levels along major waterways like the Rhine. This restricted commercial barge loading to a fraction of normal capacity. As a result, raw material supply chains suffered major disruptions.

Global Shipping Pressures and Regional Outlook

Logistical challenges extended far beyond inland waterways. A new wave of conflict in the Middle East pushed oil prices higher. This surge caused freight rates on select trade routes to triple or quadruple. Despite these headwinds, global benchmarks held steady. HMS 1/2 scrap stabilized near $368 to $373 per tonne CFR Turkey by late July. Turkish mills supported this stabilization while attempting to offset rising energy and transport costs. Market participants now anticipate subdued trading activity through August. They will monitor export resumptions, river water recovery, and the return of steel mills from summer maintenance.
