Regional melt shop output reached 28.3 million metric tons during the first six months of 2026, representing over 85% of total global production. Driven by expanding capacity in China, Asian production expanded by 6.1% year-on-year, outperforming the global average growth rate.

China’s industrial output demonstrated significant momentum through the second quarter of 2026, producing over 11.2 million metric tons of stainless steel—a 14% rebound from the holiday-affected first quarter and a 3.9% increase compared to Q2 2025. This steady rise in raw steel production persists despite growing trade friction and vocal criticism from Western trade bodies concerning state-backed industrial capacity expansion.


Divergent Trends Across Western Production Hubs

In contrast to Asia’s rapid growth, Western production hubs reflected starkly different regional market conditions. European Union stainless steel production fell by 3.7% year-on-year in the first half of 2026 to 2.9 million metric tons, dragged down by elevated energy costs, sluggish industrial demand, and domestic mill destocking.

Conversely, the United States demonstrated stable growth, buoyed by domestic manufacturing activity and scrap-intensive melt shop operations. U.S. mills produced 1.1 million metric tons in the first half, representing a 2.3% year-on-year gain. Second-quarter U.S. output rose 4.1% year-on-year to 582,000 metric tons, expanding by 2.8% over first-quarter levels as domestic steelmakers capitalized on stable scrap feedstock availability.
