World Steel Output Softens as European Demand Lags
Global steel production

Global steel production fell slightly in September. Output dropped by 0.2 percent to 142.4 million metric tons across 70 countries, according to the World Steel Association. This small drop shows how factory demand and mill profits vary by region. Moreover, economic hurdles are hitting major industrial nations. North America and Africa saw growth. However, weak demand in Europe and the Middle East pulled down the global total.

Regional Production Shifts and Output Divergence

September figures show mixed results across major factory hubs. In Asia and Oceania, output rose 0.7 percent to 104.0 million metric tons. China, the top producer, stayed steady at 73.6 million metric tons, up 0.1 percent. This happened even though local mills faced profit pressures.

Meanwhile, European makers faced bigger drops. European Union output fell 5.0 percent to 10.1 million metric tons due to high energy costs. Additionally, the Middle East suffered a sharp 20.4 percent drop to 3.6 million metric tons. On the other hand, North American output grew 3.4 percent to 9.3 million metric tons. Africa also posted a strong 10.6 percent increase to reach 2.2 million metric tons, which helped offset these losses.

Cumulative Year-to-Date Trends and Supply Chain Pressures

In the first nine months of the year, total global output reached 1,367.5 million metric tons. This marks a 0.7 percent drop compared to the same period in 2025. Therefore, the industrial sector remains cautious. Factories are balancing tight spot supplies with weak demand from construction and heavy manufacturing.

Consequently, metal buyers face a tough market. Headline stability hides tight local supplies. Global volume shifts remain small. However, trade barriers and mill cuts are causing supply delays for carbon steel products.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:

The marginal 0.2 percent dip in global steel output confirms that mills are successfully matching production to sluggish real-world demand, preventing severe oversupply. However, wide regional performance gaps mean buyers must closely track localized supply risks rather than relying on global aggregate figures.
