JSW’s New Longwall Operation at Budryk Mine Expands Coking Coal Reserves

Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa (JSW), the largest coking coal producer in the EU, launched the A-1 longwall at its Budryk mine. This new section, part of deposit 405/1, holds over 5.7 million tons of high-quality coking coal. The A-1 longwall alone contains more than 260,000 tons of coal reserves. Measuring nearly 400 meters in length and over 3 meters thick, this longwall uses modern technology for efficient and safe coal extraction.

JSW deployed advanced equipment such as BW-JZR mechanized support sections, PSJZR wall conveyors, and the Eickhoff SL 300 shearer. These innovations enhance operational productivity and miner safety. The Budryk mine’s ventilation system now connects to the neighboring Aniołki mine and Knurów-Szczygłowice shaft. This integration ensures stable air flow and improved safety conditions underground.

Strategic Expansion and Future Plans for Budryk Mine and JSW

In addition to the new A-1 longwall, JSW recently activated the Bw-1 longwall in deposit 405/2, which has over 1.6 million tons of coal reserves. The company plans to develop deposit 405/2 further to extend the Budryk mine’s life. Vice President Adam Rozmus emphasized the importance of this launch as a milestone for both Budryk and JSW.

Meanwhile, JSW is preparing a large-scale business restructuring to address liquidity challenges. The management board’s October 2025 decision aims to secure financial stability while maintaining operational growth. These steps reflect JSW’s commitment to strengthening its position in the European coking coal market.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:

JSW’s launch of the new longwall at Budryk highlights a crucial step in maintaining Europe’s coal supply chain. The integration of cutting-edge mining technology improves efficiency and safety. Moreover, the company’s proactive restructuring plan signals strategic foresight amid market pressures. As global demand for high-quality coking coal persists, JSW’s expanded reserves and operational resilience position it well for future growth.
