Kametstal Overhauls Converter No. 2 as Part of Strategic Modernization
Kametstal BOF Vessel No. 2 overhaul

Kametstal, a key asset of the Metinvest Group, has launched critical upgrades at its Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) Vessel No. 2. This overhaul plays a vital role in boosting equipment reliability and improving overall plant efficiency. As part of this phase, the team is replacing worn drive components, restoring gearboxes, and modernizing outdated cable systems.

Technicians removed the converter’s damaged gearbox wheel, which supports essential tilt operations. The Novokramatorsk Machine-Building Plant manufactured the replacement gear wheel and shipped it to the site. Kametstal crews are now preparing it for installation to minimize downtime.

Meanwhile, the upgrade includes a complete overhaul of six mounted gearboxes. Repair teams are performing bearing maintenance, machining key surfaces, and applying fresh lubricants. Kametstal’s in-house specialists are driving these tasks to ensure strict alignment with safety and operational standards.

BOF Vessel No. 2 Upgrade Supports Kametstal’s 2025 Investment Vision

This converter upgrade directly supports Kametstal’s 2025 investment roadmap. In addition to mechanical systems, workers are restoring the vertical bulk material route and replacing large portions of the converter shop’s cable network. The plant’s electrical service division leads this work to enhance power reliability and connectivity.

At the same time, maintenance crews continue to service steel cars, slag transporters, and support equipment. These coordinated efforts help keep converter operations steady while the overhaul advances on schedule.

Importantly, this project reflects Kametstal’s broader capital investment strategy. In 2025, the company will invest UAH 2.5 billion ($59.8 million) to expand production capacity. Notably, one-third of that budget will go to the second-stage rebuild of Blast Furnace No. 9 (BF-9), which stands as the plant’s most ambitious upgrade. Overall, Kametstal plans to execute 114 modernization projects throughout the year.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:

Kametstal’s BOF Vessel No. 2 overhaul highlights the company’s proactive approach to operational reliability. The targeted focus on converter gear mechanisms and electrical systems shows a clear intent to minimize risks and strengthen core steelmaking infrastructure. Furthermore, this investment aligns with global trends emphasizing energy-efficient, modernized production environments. As Kametstal accelerates its 2025 plans, including the BF-9 rebuild, it enhances its competitive positioning across the Eastern European steel sector and supports Metinvest’s long-term strategic growth.
