Kazakhstan has extended its ban on semi-finished steel exports for six more months. This decision is part of the country’s plan to improve its domestic steel industry. By focusing on local production, Kazakhstan aims to boost steel processing and increase finished product exports.

Impact of the Export Ban

The ban on semi-finished steel products, such as square billets, has driven Kazakhstan’s steel industry to focus on more refined products. This shift has led to a 30,000-ton increase in rebar exports. By refining steel production, Kazakhstan strengthens its position in the global market.

Anti-Dumping Measures Against Galvanized Steel

Kazakhstan also continues to impose anti-dumping measures on galvanized steel from China and Ukraine. In 2019, the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) set anti-dumping duties of 23.9% on Ukrainian steel and 12.69%-17% on Chinese products. These measures are now extended until September 2025 to safeguard Kazakhstan’s steel industry.

Steel Production Growth in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan’s steel production saw a 9.5% increase in 2024, reaching 4.17 million tons. Flat product production rose by 18.2%, hitting 2.9 million tons. Qarmet Iron and Steel Works exceeded production targets, further showcasing Kazakhstan’s growth in the steel sector.

Conclusion

Kazakhstan’s move to extend the semi-finished steel export ban and maintain anti-dumping measures reflects the country’s commitment to strengthening its steel industry. With increased production and a focus on higher-value products, Kazakhstan is solidifying its role in the global steel market.
