Mitsubishi Power to Provide Gas Turbines for Major Moroccan Power Plant

Mitsubishi Power has secured a crucial contract to supply two advanced M701JAC gas turbines for the Al Wahda Open Cycle Gas Turbine Power Plant in Morocco. This agreement also includes auxiliary equipment. The project marks a significant step in strengthening Morocco’s energy infrastructure. It will also improve the stability of its national grid.

Al Wahda Power Plant: A Key Element of Morocco’s Energy Strategy

Located near the Al Wahda Dam in the Ouazzane Province, the Al Wahda Power Plant will generate 990 MW. This accounts for 7% of Morocco’s electricity capacity. The facility will operate as a peaker plant, providing crucial support during peak demand. It will also help stabilize grid fluctuations. As Morocco aims to increase renewable energy sources, the plant will play an essential role in integrating these renewable resources into the grid. Finally, it will ensure a reliable power supply even during times of high demand.

Mitsubishi Power’s M701JAC turbines stand out for their high efficiency and flexibility. These turbines can co-fire both hydrogen and natural gas. This makes them a perfect fit for Morocco’s long-term energy goals. Their ability to quickly respond to load changes ensures stability as more intermittent renewable energy sources are added to the grid. Morocco aims to achieve a 52% share of renewable energy in its electricity mix by 2030. The Al Wahda plant will be critical in meeting this target.

Strengthening Partnerships for Long-Term Success

In addition to supplying the turbines, Mitsubishi Power signed a long-term service agreement with the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE). The agreement ensures that the plant will receive ongoing maintenance, parts, and repairs. This will keep the equipment in optimal condition for years to come.

Mitsubishi Power has partnered with ONEE and China Energy Engineering Corporation Limited (CEEC) on this major project. This collaboration underscores their shared commitment to advancing clean, efficient, and reliable power solutions in the MENA region. Once operational in 2027, the Al Wahda Power Plant will be a cornerstone in Morocco’s energy future. Thus, it will reinforce the country’s transition to sustainable power generation.
