Stibnite mining district tungsten and antimony

Perpetua Resources Corp. has secured a $40 million funding award from the U.S. Army. The grant will evaluate the feasibility of producing domestic tungsten concentrate at its historic Stibnite mining district in Idaho. This joint investment highlights federal efforts to rebuild North American critical mineral supply chains. It also aims to reduce foreign import reliance for defense and industrial applications.

Expanding Critical Mineral Recovery in Idaho

The project is structured as a cost-share program through an Ordnance Technology Initiative Agreement. Its initial phase will cost about $18 million over 18 months. Perpetua Resources and the U.S. Army will share these costs equally. The funding will support targeted drilling to define a potential tungsten resource. It will also fund material collection for metallurgical testing, plus the engineering and permitting of an exploration decline. This underground access lets engineers evaluate high-grade tungsten mineralization zones beneath the historic district.

Rebuilding US Tungsten Supply Chains

The United States has lacked commercial domestic tungsten mining since 2015. This leaves industrial manufacturers and defense contractors heavily dependent on overseas imports. Historically, the Stibnite district was a vital domestic source. It supplied about half of the tungsten and 90 percent of the antimony used by the U.S. in World War II. This latest award brings total U.S. government critical mineral funding to $126 million since 2022. It underscores the site’s strategic importance for national security.

Broader Resource Potential and Stibnite Redevelopment

Beyond the dedicated tungsten program, Perpetua continues to advance its broader multi-metal portfolio at Stibnite. Ongoing exploration beneath the permitted Hangar Flats pit has identified substantial resources. These include about 1.37 million ounces of gold and over 95 million pounds of antimony. These resources currently sit outside the active mine plan. Any expanded development outside current permits will require separate environmental reviews and regulatory approvals. However, overlapping high-grade deposits reinforce the commercial viability of reviving the district as a multi-commodity asset.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:

The injection of $40 million in U.S. Army funding into Perpetua Resources highlights how national security imperatives are actively reshaping the North American critical minerals landscape. By targeting domestic tungsten and antimony supply, the initiative addresses critical vulnerabilities in Western manufacturing and defense supply chains. For market participants, the key will be tracking how effectively these early-stage exploration and metallurgical benchmarks translate into fully permitted, commercial-scale production in the coming years.
