Rio Tinto has officially inaugurated two major lithium assets in Argentina’s Catamarca province. The combined investment reached nearly $985 million, boosting the South American nation’s position in the global supply chain.

The launch covers the new Sal de Vida facility and the Fénix 1B expansion project. Both assets achieved first production during the second quarter ahead of schedule. This dual development highlights Rio Tinto’s push into critical minerals. Major miners are scaling up capacity to meet long-term energy transition demand. Once output ramps up fully, the combined operations will introduce 25,000 tonnes of annual lithium carbonate equivalent to the market. This adds vital supply for electric vehicle battery manufacturers and energy storage producers globally.

Expanding Footprint in the Lithium Triangle

The $985 million injection into Catamarca province marks a key milestone for Rio Tinto. The company aims to build a tier-one battery materials portfolio. Sal de Vida is a new greenfield brine operation designed with an annual target of 15,000 tonnes of LCE. It sits roughly 20 kilometers north-east of the established Fénix site. Meanwhile, the Fénix 1B project expands an existing commercial operation. It adds 10,000 tonnes of annual capacity, lifting total output at that facility to approximately 40,000 tonnes.

Beyond Catamarca, Rio Tinto is advancing its flagship $2.5 billion Rincon project in Salta province. That project targets roughly 60,000 tonnes of annual battery-grade lithium carbonate capacity. Together, these projects reflect a multi-billion-dollar commitment to South America’s Lithium Triangle. The mining major plans to deploy about $4 billion in total growth capital across regional operations. It also commits to source roughly 70% of expenditures locally.

Market Context and Supply Chain Pressures

The timely delivery of these Argentine assets arrives at a pivotal moment. Global lithium markets continue to navigate cyclical price volatility and shifting structural supply dynamics. Near-term market balances face headwinds from accelerated project pipelines and fluctuating electric vehicle adoption rates. However, procurement managers and battery cell manufacturers face tightening structural deficits toward the end of the decade.

By bringing low-cost brine production online early, Rio Tinto positions itself as a reliable supplier. The firm can weather short-term pricing troughs. An emphasis on localized supply chains and community engagement in Argentina addresses growing ESG scrutiny. This strategy offers buyers greater traceability and sustainability assurance across Latin America.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:

Rio Tinto’s successful commissioning of its Catamarca operations highlights the transition of major mining houses from exploratory planning to active, commercial-scale output in South America. While near-term lithium spot markets remain sensitive to supply gluts, securing low-cost brine production capacity now positions tier-one producers to capture high-margin upside as long-term energy transition demand accelerates.
