The incidents occurred in various locations including the town of Geseke, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Hamburg, highlighting the dangers associated with personal firework use.

Among the dead was a 24-year-old man in Geseke, who tragically set off a homemade firework prematurely. In addition, a 45-year-old and a 50-year-old man died after fireworks exploded while they were holding them. A fourth victim, a 20-year-old from Hamburg, was killed by a homemade firecracker. These accidents underscore the ongoing dangers surrounding firework use during the New Year’s celebration period, even as Germany permits fireworks for a limited time.

In Berlin, the New Year’s celebration descended into violent riots, resulting in over 400 arrests. Law enforcement in other cities, including Hamburg and Leipzig, also reported violent confrontations, with fireworks and bottles being hurled at officers.

Amidst the chaos, German police and firefighters’ unions called for a nationwide ban on private fireworks. In some cities, officers reported being “literally shot at” with fireworks, while others were attacked with bottles and other projectiles. This ongoing violence has raised alarms about public safety and the ability of emergency services to handle such situations.

In response to the widespread unrest, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser condemned the riots and pledged to prosecute those responsible with “the utmost severity.” Additionally, Berlin Mayor Franziska Giffey, a member of the Social Democrats (SPD), stated plans to review firework policies with the state government. The goal is to reduce the risk associated with personal fireworks, which have contributed to both accidents and violence during the festivities.
