Preventing Dangerous Cargo Albanian officials have successfully prevented a Turkish-flagged ship, the Moliva XA443A, from docking at the port of Durres, following concerns about its cargo of suspected hazardous waste. The intervention came after a warning from the Basel Action Network (BAN), a Seattle-based environmental watchdog.
Details of the Shipment The ship was found to be carrying 102 containers, which are believed to hold approximately 2,100 metric tonnes of waste pollution control filter dust from the steel industry. Prosecutors have ordered the containers to be seized and stored safely for further monitoring, ensuring they are kept in an environmentally secure location.
Journey and Rejection The Moliva XA443A initially left Durres on July 4 on two Maersk-chartered vessels, with Thailand listed as the intended destination. However, upon arrival, Thailand refused to accept the shipment and requested Singaporean authorities to halt it. The vessel subsequently made stops in Portugal, Spain, and Gioia Tauro, Italy, before returning to Albania after a lengthy three-month journey.
Political Implications The situation has drawn significant political attention, particularly from the Albanian opposition, which has accused the government of complicity in illegal hazardous waste trafficking. In response, Prime Minister Edi Rama stated in Parliament that all shipment documents had been thoroughly verified.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about hazardous waste management and environmental safety in the region, raising questions about regulatory practices and accountability in waste transportation.
