Shipments Increase by 4.6% Year-Over-Year, Led by Sheet and Plate Products

The Aluminum Association has reported a 4.6% increase in aluminum demand in North America (U.S. and Canada) through the first three quarters of 2024. Preliminary estimates from the association’s “Aluminum Situation” report highlight that total aluminum demand reached 20,712 million pounds through Q3 2024, compared to 19,798 million pounds in the same period of 2023.

The growth is largely attributed to a strong performance in sheet and plate products, which saw a 6.9% increase year-over-year. Other product categories, such as foil, extrusions, and electrical products, experienced declines in demand.

Mill Product Demand and Exports See Positive Trends

Semifabricated aluminum products, often referred to as “mill” products, saw a 2.5% year-over-year increase through Q3 2024. The decrease in imported aluminum and aluminum products by 8% during the same period further underscores the increasing strength of the domestic aluminum industry. In addition, exports of aluminum (excluding scrap) grew by a notable 23.3% in Q3 2024.

The Aluminum Association’s Index of Net New Orders of Aluminum Mill Products also shows positive movement, rising 1.2% compared to 2023’s figure through November. This index, which tracks new orders for aluminum products, is a key indicator of the industry’s health and competitiveness.

Charles Johnson, president and CEO of the Aluminum Association, commented on the results, stating, “This continued demand growth reflects the aluminum industry’s strength and ability to compete in a dynamic marketplace. While there may be some uncertainty ahead, aluminum will continue to be a critical material used to build a stronger, more sustainable America, and the industry stands ready to deliver.”
