ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AMNS India) has announced an ambitious goal to make 70% of its steel production green by the 2026-2027 financial year. This move aligns with India’s new Green Steel Taxonomy, which sets environmental standards for steel producers. The company aims to become the first integrated steel producer in India to receive three stars under this system.

Green Steel Taxonomy and Environmental Standards

The Green Steel Taxonomy, launched in December 2024 by India’s Ministry of Steel, establishes environmental criteria for steel manufacturers. To meet the green steel classification, emissions should not exceed 2.2 tons of CO2 per ton of finished steel. Companies meeting or exceeding these standards will be awarded a star rating.

AMNS India is already ahead of the curve, achieving an emissions intensity of 2.17 tons of CO2 per ton of steel—14% lower than the national average. By 2030, the company plans to reduce this figure further to 1.8 tons of CO2 per ton.

Decarbonization Efforts and Renewable Energy Integration

As part of its sustainability efforts, AMNS India is investing in low-carbon technologies and renewable energy. The company currently utilizes 65% of its production capacity using the low-carbon direct reduced iron (DRI) route, powered by natural gas. AMNS India is also investing in renewable energy projects in Andhra Pradesh and expanding scrap recycling facilities in Maharashtra.

Additionally, the company is implementing digital and machine technologies to improve energy and resource efficiency. These initiatives will help AMNS India meet its green steel production target and contribute to India’s broader decarbonization goals.

Future Outlook: World’s Largest Steel Plant in Hazira

AMNS India is also making strides with its world’s largest stand-alone integrated steel plant in Hazira, Gujarat. With a capacity to produce 24 million tons of steel annually, the plant is expected to be completed by 2029. This project will further solidify AMNS India’s position as a leader in the global steel industry and a key player in India’s green steel revolution.
