
A Major Lithium Carbonate Offtake Deal Strengthens Circular Supply Chains
=”noopener”>Ascend Elements, a U.S. lithium-ion battery recycler, signed a multiyear offtake agreement for lithium carbonate with global commodities firm Trafigura Group</strong> Pte. Ltd. The deal covers 15,000 metric tons of recycled lithium carbonate to be delivered between 2027 and 2031.
Under the agreement, Trafigura will manage global logistics and marketing. Ascend Elements will produce low-carbon lithium carbonate from recycled batteries and manufacturing scrap. The material will come from Ascend’s patented Hydro-to-Cathode process, which cuts emissions and supports sustainable battery production.
The partnership strengthens Ascend’s operations in North America and Europe. It also allows Trafigura to expand its recycled materials portfolio. Both companies plan to help OEMs meet circularity and compliance goals across the EV and energy storage industries.

Ascend CEO Linh Austin highlighted the deal’s strategic value. He said Trafigura’s global platform and Ascend’s Hydro-to-Cathode process transform circularity into supply security. Together, they aim to deliver traceable, responsibly sourced lithium carbonate across the U.S. and Europe. This collaboration lowers carbon emissions and mitigates geopolitical risks.
Gonzalo De Olazaval, head of Metals and Minerals at Trafigura, affirmed the firm’s commitment to circularity. He noted that Ascend’s process strengthens domestic battery supply chains in both the U.S. and the EU. Building these networks reduces reliance on imported critical minerals and enhances supply resilience.
Trafigura, based in Singapore with over 50 global offices, including one in Houston, will use its vast logistics network to distribute recycled lithium carbonate worldwide. This reach ensures consistent, high-quality, and sustainable supply to global battery manufacturers.
