Blastr Green Steel Partners with Interfer Edelstahl to Expand Low-Carbon Steel Supply

Blastr Green Steel

Blastr Green Steel, based in Norway, has formed a strategic partnership with Interfer Edelstahl Group, a German steel trading company. Blastr will supply 150,000 tons of ultra-low CO2 steel annually to Interfer. This agreement is Blastr’s second offtake deal in just over a month. It covers about 10% of the capacity planned for its Inkoo, Finland plant. The plant will produce 2.5 million tons of low-carbon steel annually. This collaboration is a key step in meeting the growing demand for sustainable steel.

Commitment to Decarbonized Steel Production

Blastr focuses on decarbonizing the steel production process. The company uses hydrogen instead of coal and clean energy for feedstock. It aims to lower the carbon footprint of its steel products. Blastr targets ultra-low CO2 emissions of less than 500 kilograms per ton of steel. This approach is far better than traditional steelmaking methods. The partnership supports Blastr’s broader goal of creating a low-carbon steel value chain. As demand for sustainable materials grows, this strategy becomes more crucial.

Meeting Growing Market Demand for Green Steel

Blastr CEO Mark Bula highlighted the rising demand for decarbonized steel. Steel products with reduced carbon emissions now command a market premium. This partnership with Interfer helps drive the green steel transition in Europe. Blastr believes that producing green steel at scale will help meet EU climate goals. It will also support the global shift to more sustainable industrial practices.

Interfer’s Role in the Green Transition

Interfer Edelstahl Group, a Blastr shareholder, is committed to the green transition in steel production. CEO Gerold Lorenz stated that the partnership with Blastr aligns with Interfer’s mission. Interfer aims to promote low-carbon steel solutions and expand its portfolio. It will offer Blastr’s ultra-low CO2 steel to customers seeking sustainable materials. This will drive the global shift to green steel markets.

Next Steps in the Partnership

The MoU outlines a long-term commitment to supply hot-rolled coil (HRC) steel from Blastr’s Inkoo plant. First deliveries are expected by the end of 2029. Blastr and Interfer will begin binding agreement negotiations in 2025. This collaboration marks a major step in scaling up low-carbon steel production. It will expand Blastr’s reach in European and global markets.
