Samancor Lowers Charge Chrome Price for Fourth Quarter Amid Market Changes
Samchrome FZE, the distributor for South African ferrochrome producer Samancor, has announced a reduced reference price for charge chrome in Europe, now set at $1.46/lb for the fourth quarter of 2024. This represents a 4% decrease from the previous benchmark of $1.52/lb.
Changes Following EUBM Discontinuation
The new price replaces the European Benchmark Ferrochrome Price (EUBM), which was discontinued in June 2024 due to regulatory pressure and criticism from market participants who felt it was disconnected from actual spot prices of higher-grade ferrochrome.
Concerns Over Market Reflection
Even with the new reference price in place, numerous spot transactions have been recorded below the $1.46/lb level. Traders and end-users are increasingly concerned that this pricing, like the EUBM, may not accurately reflect market conditions. Consequently, many are exploring alternative pricing mechanisms, such as index-based systems provided by price reporting agencies, to better align with real market dynamics.
Push for Transparent Pricing Solutions
The search for a more accurate pricing system continues in both the European and North American markets. The limitations of the EUBM, alongside concerns over the reliability of the current reference price, highlight the need for a transparent and market-responsive pricing approach. The future of charge chrome pricing may increasingly rely on these newer, index-driven mechanisms to better capture true market value.
