Chile’s La Isla Lithium Project Poised for Growth

Promising Discoveries at La Isla

Chile’s La Isla salt flat is on track to emerge as the country’s third-largest lithium project, as reported by the national mining company Enami. Recent drilling has revealed impressive lithium concentrations, averaging 921 mg/l and peaking at 979 mg/l over a depth of 252 meters.

Dominance in Global Lithium Reserves

Home to the world’s largest lithium reserves, Chile accounts for 36-40% of global totals, predominantly found in the Atacama salt flat within the Antofagasta region. This significant resource has established Chile as a key player in the global lithium market. In 2023, Codelco reported even more remarkable lithium concentrations nearby at Maricunga, with averages exceeding 1,000 mg/l.

Altoandinos Lithium Project Overview

La Isla is a vital component of Enami’s Altoandinos lithium project, which includes the Aguilar and Grande salt flats. Earlier exploration at Aguilar indicated lower lithium averages of 740 mg/l, with a maximum concentration of 984 mg/l.

Innovative Extraction Techniques

To improve lithium extraction while reducing environmental impact, Enami has partnered with eight international laboratories to explore direct lithium extraction (DLE) technologies. Notable participants include France’s Adionics, U.S.-based Lilac Solutions, and Australia’s Rio Tinto.

Future Collaborations and Developments

Enami is currently in negotiations with six companies to select a partner for the operation and financing of the Altoandinos project, with a decision anticipated by March 2025. As the second-largest lithium producer globally, Chile aims to strengthen its position as a major supplier of this essential metal through the development of La Isla.
