Activists Draw Attention to SUVs’ Role in the Climate Crisis

In the wake of devastating floods in Valencia, the Tyre Extinguishers have intensified their campaign against SUVs. The activists linked these vehicles to climate change, highlighting their contribution to rising global temperatures and extreme weather events. In Edinburgh, members of the group marked SUVs with the message, “These cars kill Valencians,” directly connecting the flooding to the harmful impact of SUVs.

SUVs: Major Contributors to Climate Change

Tyre Extinguishers have long opposed the environmental toll of SUVs. The group claims these vehicles are among the largest contributors to global pollution. They argue that SUVs generate about 1 billion tonnes of CO2 annually. In 2023, there were over 360 million SUVs on the roads, significantly increasing global oil consumption.

The group emphasized that if SUVs were a country, they would rank as the fifth-largest emitter of CO2 worldwide. Following the deadly flooding in Valencia, which claimed 214 lives, activists are calling for immediate action. Studies show climate change intensified the rainfall, and SUVs are a key driver in worsening the crisis.

Growing Global Campaign Against SUVs

The Tyre Extinguishers’ campaign, originally focused on deflating tires, has expanded in response to the floods. In Edinburgh, they marked 16 SUVs with the names of victims of climate-related accidents. They also highlighted victims like José Castillejo, a 28-year-old who died in the Valencia floods. The activists want their actions to inspire global solidarity.

The movement now spans 21 countries, including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the UK. The Tyre Extinguishers also have networks in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the US. The group has called for others to join their efforts. Detailed instructions on how to participate are available on their website.

Campaign’s Message: Pressure on Governments and Industries

The activists argue that SUVs are a danger to public safety and the environment. They warn that the increasing number of these vehicles will only exacerbate climate-related disasters. By raising awareness, they hope to shift public opinion and push for cleaner, safer alternatives.

As their campaign grows, the Tyre Extinguishers remain committed to challenging the dominance of SUVs. They believe that urgent action is needed to address their environmental impact and reduce the global carbon footprint.
