Conflux Technology partners with AMSL Aero to enhance hydrogen fuel cell cooling for sustainable aviation

Conflux Technology is collaborating with aircraft manufacturer AMSL Aero to develop an advanced cooling system for the hydrogen fuel cells powering the Vertiia Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft. This cutting-edge project aims to improve the efficiency and sustainability of hydrogen-powered aviation.

Phase One: Heat Exchanger Concepts

In the first phase of their collaboration, Conflux Technology developed three heat exchanger concepts. The primary goal was to minimize weight and volume while effectively managing continuous heat loads. These innovations are designed to reduce drag, allowing for flight distances of up to 1,000 km.

Phase Two: Optimizing Design and Manufacturing

The project is now moving into its second phase. In this phase, Conflux will work on refining the design and producing a full proof-of-concept assembly. This assembly will be tested to evaluate its performance in the Vertiia’s hydrogen fuel cell powertrain. The focus will be on cooling high transient heat loads, particularly during vertical takeoff, landing, and hover operations, which are key challenges for VTOL aircraft. Moreover, addressing these challenges is essential for optimizing performance and ensuring efficiency. Furthermore, successful cooling strategies will enable longer flight times and improved reliability.

Addressing Key Constraints in Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology

The collaboration also targets important constraints such as weight, performance, and packaging size. To address these challenges, Conflux Technology plans to utilize additive manufacturing techniques. By leveraging its patented thin-walled designs, Conflux aims to deliver efficient thermal performance and reduced drag, crucial for the aircraft’s flight efficiency.

Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Aviation

Conflux Technology’s founder and CEO, Michael Fuller, highlighted the transformative potential of hydrogen fuel cells. He stated, “Hydrogen fuel cells represent a transformative technology in Australia’s pursuit of sustainable energy solutions. We are proud to incorporate our heat exchange technology to enhance the efficiency and performance of Vertiia’s hydrogen fuel cells.”

A Partnership for the Future of Clean Aviation

AMSL Aero’s Chairman, Chris Smallhorn, emphasized the significance of the partnership, noting, “In Vertiia, we are building a hydrogen-electric aircraft that flies record-breaking distances at Formula 1 speeds, making Conflux Technology the perfect partner for us.” AMSL Aero is committed to Victoria for the future development of the Vertiia aircraft, with the Avalon Air Show being the ideal venue to showcase the partnership.

Simon Coburn, Hydrogen Systems Engineer at AMSL Aero, also expressed excitement about the collaboration. He stated, “Together, we are pioneering a future where clean energy and cutting-edge engineering will drive the aviation industry towards a greener and more sustainable future.”
