Coterra Energy and Halliburton Unveil Fully Automated Hydraulic Fracturing Service

Coterra Energy and Halliburton, Fully Automated Hydraulic Fracturing Service

Introduction of Octiv Auto Frac Technology

Coterra Energy and Halliburton have jointly launched the Octiv Auto Frac service, marking a significant milestone in hydraulic fracturing. This is the first fully automated hydraulic fracturing technology in North America, integrated into Halliburton’s ZEUS platform. The Octiv Auto Frac service allows operators to automate stage delivery execution at the push of a button, eliminating the need for manual fracture decisions during pumping. This technological advancement ensures precise execution of hydraulic fracturing operations, boosting efficiency and operational control.

Key Features and Benefits

The service is built on Halliburton’s advanced ZEUS intelligent fracturing platform, which includes electric pumping units and Sensori fracture monitoring systems. These features offer significant improvements over traditional manual methods, enabling Coterra Energy to fully automate its fracturing process, making it more consistent, precise, and efficient. The ability to configure and automate the entire fracturing process based on specific designs represents a major step forward in operational automation within the energy sector.

Efficiency Gains

The deployment of the Octiv Auto Frac service has already demonstrated a 17% increase in stage efficiency. Given these promising results, Coterra has now expanded the service to all of its remaining completion programs in the Permian Basin. This broader deployment aims to streamline operations and enhance overall productivity, as the service provides more autonomy and control over the fracturing process.

Industry Impact and Strategic Goals

The Octiv Auto Frac service is a game-changer in completion performance, providing consistent, automated fracture execution and giving operators greater control over their assets. Coterra’s decision to adopt this innovative technology aligns with its ongoing focus on maximizing efficiencies and adopting advanced technologies to improve operational performance. By introducing automation, Coterra aims to further enhance its fracturing operations, ensuring more reliable results and more streamlined processes.

CEO’s Vision

Tom Jorden, CEO of Coterra, highlighted that the deployment of intelligent automation is central to Coterra’s approach to maximizing operational efficiency. The Octiv Auto Frac service is a prime example of how technology can improve consistency in execution, provide greater control over completion stages, and drive higher value for energy companies.
