Patent Strengthens First Solar’s PV Technology Portfolio
U.S.-based solar module manufacturer First Solar has secured a U.S. patent for its solar cell production technology, potentially setting the stage for intellectual property enforcement in the solar industry. The patent specifically covers TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) solar cells, which utilize crystalline silicon (c-Si) photovoltaic (PV) technology. This advancement builds upon First Solar’s 2013 acquisition of TetraSun.
Patent Infringement Investigations Underway
Following the patent grant, First Solar has initiated investigations into potential infringements by c-Si PV manufacturers operating in the U.S., Mexico, China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Japan, and Australia. The company is also pursuing additional patent applications in the European Union and Japan, signaling a broader effort to protect its innovations in global markets.
Focus on Thin-Film Solar Leadership
While First Solar is well known for its cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin-film solar modules, this patent expands its influence into the crystalline silicon space. The company’s advanced technologies support the clean energy transition by offering alternatives to traditional PV cells, contributing to the diversification and resilience of the global solar supply chain.
