Europe is currently grappling with a severe flu epidemic following the holiday season. Indeed, hospitals across the continent are reporting a substantial surge in flu cases. Notably, children under 15 and adults over 60 are the most vulnerable. Consequently, hospitals in countries such as France and Spain are struggling to manage the overwhelming patient load. Therefore, they are setting up temporary units to alleviate pressure on emergency departments. Specifically, influenza B has emerged as the dominant strain this year. Moreover, medical experts are warning that the elderly, in particular, are at a heightened risk of developing serious respiratory complications.
Regional Outbreaks and Enhanced Health Measures Undertaken
France and Spain’s healthcare systems are, in fact, under significant strain. Flu cases are rising in both nations. For example, Dr. Jean-Luc Leymarie in France has noted a major epidemic unseen in years. Similarly, Catalonia and Valencia in Spain are feeling the pressure. Thus, hospitals in both countries have implemented temporary units. Furthermore, health workers are urging preparedness. Meanwhile, Hungary has also seen a rise in flu cases. As a result, stricter health measures are being implemented in Budapest. Specifically, mask-wearing is mandatory in some hospitals and visitor bans are enacted. Additionally, Győr, Vác, and Debrecen have followed suit with similar precautions.
Romania Reports Flu-Related Deaths, Urges Vaccination Drive
Romania’s flu epidemic is, moreover, worsening. To illustrate, over 4,100 cases were reported last week, double the previous week. Correspondingly, health authorities confirm four flu-related deaths. In particular, Bucharest, Cluj, and Brasov have high case numbers. Officials expect cases to rise further as schools reopen. Therefore, doctors stress vaccination as the best prevention. In fact, over 1.1 million flu vaccines were administered. Moreover, a nasal spray is available for children aged 2-18, with immunity developing two weeks post-vaccination.
Vaccination Strongly Urged Across Europe Amid Rising Cases
Health professionals are, therefore, urging precautions, especially vaccination. In particular, Dr. Olivier Lucidarme emphasizes vaccination’s importance. For instance, most severe cases are among unvaccinated individuals. Since immunity develops within two weeks, experts advocate early vaccination.
