GE Vernova Partners with Dominion Energy to Modernize Saluda Hydropower Plant

Saluda Hydropower Plant

GE Vernova has secured a contract with Dominion Energy South Carolina to modernize two turbines at the Saluda Hydropower Plant. Located on the Saluda River near Columbia, South Carolina, this 206MW plant has been a crucial energy source since 1930. The modernization project aims to improve operational efficiency, reliability, and flexibility, while extending the plant’s lifespan. GE Vernova will replace turbines in Units 1 and 3 with advanced aerating turbines and rehabilitate the generator in Unit 3. The first upgrade is expected to be completed by 2027.

Aerating Turbine Technology to Improve Water Quality and Support Aquatic Life

One of the key features of this modernization is the installation of GE Vernova’s patented aerating turbine technology. This technology increases dissolved oxygen levels in the water, improving water quality in the Saluda River. By enhancing oxygenation, the turbines will help sustain local aquatic life and preserve the natural ecosystem. The aerating turbines have already shown positive results in other projects, such as the High Rock hydropower project in North Carolina.

Saluda Hydropower Plant: A Legacy of Service and Sustainability

The Saluda Hydropower Plant has been a cornerstone of South Carolina’s infrastructure for nearly a century. Originally built to support Columbia’s textile industry, the plant now serves various purposes, including flood control, water supply, and recreation. It also created Lake Murray, a popular 48,000-acre lake. The ongoing modernization will enhance all five Francis hydropower units, improving the plant’s overall performance.

Strengthening Long-Term Reliability and Partnership

This project further strengthens the long-standing partnership between GE Vernova and Dominion Energy. With nearly 70% of Dominion Energy’s fleet using GE Vernova’s technology, the modernization of Saluda will ensure that the plant remains a reliable and efficient energy source for South Carolina. Dominion Energy’s Vice President of Generation, Iris Griffin, emphasized that the turbine replacements are essential for maintaining the plant’s long-term viability and providing safe, reliable power to the region.
