Germany has announced the formation of the German Aluminium Alliance, aimed at facilitating the transition to a competitive and climate-neutral aluminum industry. This initiative, led by the Aluminium Deutschland association, brings together significant stakeholders, including major trade unions IG Metall and IG BCE, as well as economic authorities from several federal states, including North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony-Anhalt, Saarland, and Hamburg.
Objectives for a Sustainable Aluminum Industry
The primary goals of the alliance include the development of low-emission aluminum production technologies, the establishment of a climate-neutral value chain, and the promotion of sustainability through a circular economy. Recognizing the critical role of Germany’s aluminum sector in decarbonization efforts, the alliance aims to secure research funding, ensure stable energy supplies, and advocate for fair global competition to prevent carbon leakage. These initiatives are designed to strengthen Germany’s industrial competitiveness while aligning with EU climate targets.
The Importance of Collaboration
Rob van Gils, president of Aluminium Deutschland, highlighted the essential role of aluminum in achieving climate objectives. He emphasized that collaboration with political and social partners is crucial for ensuring sustainability and enhancing the resilience of the industry.
