
Global stainless steel production rose by 6.3% year-on-year in the first half of 2024, reaching 30.37 million tonnes.

China, India, and Southeast Asia Drive Regional Growth
China continues to dominate the global stainless steel market with a 5.9% production increase, reaching 18.75 million tonnes.
The country now accounts for over 60% of global output, supported by domestic demand and industrial expansion. Other Asian countries, excluding China and South Korea, posted a 9% rise in output. India and Japan led this growth, driven by strong construction and automotive sectors.
Europe Slows While the Americas Accelerate Output
European production remained stagnant, growing only 0.3% to 3.14 million tonnes amid economic uncertainty and high energy costs.
In contrast, the Americas showed stronger performance. U.S. stainless steel production increased by 9%, reaching 1.03 million tonnes, fueled by demand in construction and exports. Emerging producers like Brazil, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, and Indonesia collectively recorded a 10% increase, totaling 3.84 million tonnes.

Indonesia is becoming a major stainless steel player thanks to continued investment in its steel sector.
The country’s rapid production growth is reshaping global market dynamics. Its output is expected to help meet future industrial demand across Asia and beyond.
