Redwood Materials has announced a partnership with Ultium Cells, the battery cell manufacturing joint venture between General Motors (GM) and LG Energy Solution, to recycle scrap from their Warren, Ohio and Spring Hill, Tennessee facilities.
Redwood will manage all scrap from these two plants, processing approximately 10,000 tons of waste material annually. Typically, 5-10% of the materials used in battery plants end up as scrap. The scrap recycled by Redwood will be processed into battery materials and returned to battery cell manufacturers. Redwood’s CEO is JB Straubel, a co-founder of Tesla.
Redwood claims that its recycling process reduces energy and water consumption while reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
As global automakers ramp up production of electric vehicles to meet greenhouse gas reduction regulations, investment in electric vehicle battery projects and the demand for battery material recycling are increasing.
In other news, Sila, a battery materials manufacturer co-founded by a former Tesla engineer, announced last December that it will supply silicon anode materials to Panasonic’s U.S. battery plant. Sila CEO Gene Berdichevsky declined to disclose financial details of the deal, which is expected to begin in 2025.
Additionally, in 2023, Tesla announced a $3.6 billion investment in its Nevada complex to increase production of a new and larger type of battery cell.
