GreenGo Energy Moves Forward with Major Green Hydrogen Development in Africa
GreenGo Energy has secured over 100,000 hectares near Nouakchott, Mauritania, for its 6GW Megaton Moon green hydrogen project. This agreement, made with Mauritania’s Minister of Energy and Petroleum, marks GreenGo Energy’s first large-scale renewable hydrogen project in Africa.
The Megaton Moon project aims to develop green hydrogen production through a combination of wind and solar power, with a focus on sustainability. GreenGo plans to deploy the project in phases, from 2029 to 2033, to ensure production meets market demand and supply chain readiness.
Phased Development Plan for Green Hydrogen Production
The project’s first phase will be completed by the end of 2029. It will feature 500MW of electrolysis, 600MW of wind power, and 600MWp of solar PV. This phase will produce 339,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually. The full project will feature 6GW of electrolysis capacity, 6.8GW of wind power, and 6.3GWp of solar power. This will allow for major green hydrogen production.
The phased approach enables GreenGo Energy to address market and supply chain needs while maintaining flexibility. The company will now focus on site surveys, geotechnical assessments, and feasibility studies.
Mauritania’s Position as a Green Energy Leader
Karsten Nielsen, GreenGo Energy’s CEO, praised Mauritania for its abundant renewable resources and competitive production costs. The country’s progressive policies, including the introduction of Africa’s first Green Hydrogen Code, strengthen its position as a global energy leader.
In addition to energy production, the project will address critical water and power shortages in Nouakchott and surrounding regions. The long-term target for Megaton Moon is to achieve 60GW of hybrid wind and solar power generation and 35GW of electrolysis capacity. This will produce 4 million tonnes of green hydrogen or 18 million tonnes of green ammonia annually.
