Harmony Gold Strengthens Portfolio with CSA Copper Mine Acquisition

Harmony Gold Mining has agreed to acquire MAC Copper, owner of the producing CSA Copper Mine in Australia, for $1.03 billion. The CSA mine, located in New South Wales’ Cobar Region, reported over 41,000 tonnes of copper output in 2024. This acquisition fits Harmony Gold’s strategy to grow as a low-cost global gold and copper producer. MAC Copper’s extensive tenements provide scope for extending the mine’s life and boosting production at the nearby Merrin Mine.

The purchase price offers MAC shareholders a premium of over 32% compared to recent trading prices on both the NYSE and ASX. MAC Copper’s board unanimously supports the deal, which key shareholders representing 20.1% of shares back. Harmony Gold CEO Beyers Nel emphasized the strategic value of this acquisition, expecting to improve margins and cash flow through operational expertise.

Advancing Copper Production and Resource Growth at CSA

The CSA Copper Mine holds over 12 years of reserve life with stable resource management. Drilling results suggest increasing copper grades at greater depths. Additionally, MAC Copper advances development at the Merrin Mine, expected to begin production by late 2025. Harmony Gold plans to leverage its underground mining expertise to optimize the CSA operation and enhance returns.

This acquisition diversifies Harmony Gold’s asset base with a high-grade copper operation in a stable, mining-friendly jurisdiction. The deal awaits approvals from the Australian Foreign Investment Review Board and South African Reserve Bank, along with restructuring of existing streaming and royalty agreements.
