India’s JSW Energy Breaks Ground on Landmark Thermal Power Plant

JSW Energy has officially begun construction of a 1,600-megawatt ultra supercritical thermal power plant in Salboni, West Bengal, India. The $1.88 billion project, equivalent to INR160 billion, represents the company’s largest greenfield initiative to date.

This major infrastructure development includes two 800MW units and operates under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement with the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL). The plant will use domestic coal secured under India’s SHAKTI B (IV) coal allocation policy.

Regional Growth and Industrial Expansion in Salboni

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal attended the groundbreaking ceremony. Jindal highlighted the plant as the largest privately developed thermal project in the state and a cornerstone of JSW’s Eastern India expansion.

The project will create over 2,000 direct and indirect jobs, while also supporting regional development through skill training and local resource use. Additionally, JSW Energy plans to build a 2,000-acre JSW Industrial Park nearby, offering modern, plug-and-play infrastructure for future businesses.

According to Jindal, this project will enhance West Bengal’s power security and drive industrial growth in Salboni and its surrounding regions.

JSW Targets 20GW Capacity, Eyes Early 2030 Goal

As part of its long-term growth strategy, JSW Energy aims to reach 20GW of installed capacity well before 2030. The company currently maintains a secured project pipeline exceeding 30GW and expects to hit 14GW by June 2025.

Meanwhile, India’s coal and energy sector remains active. Coal India and Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) have signed a non-binding MoU to build another 1,600MW coal-fired plant in Jharkhand. This INR165 billion ($1.94 billion) project will expand the Chandrapura Thermal Power Station.

In contrast, the renewable energy sector is also advancing. ReNew, a leading Indian renewables firm, recently launched a 1.3 GWp solar power plant in Rajasthan.

At SuperMetalPrice, we continue to track the intersections of coal, metals, and energy infrastructure that shape regional growth and material demand. Large-scale thermal projects like Salboni influence demand for steel, alloyed piping, and thermal-resistant metals, especially during the construction and equipment manufacturing phases.
