BIR Recognizes Marc Natan’s Lifelong Impact on Non-Ferrous Metals Industry
The Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) has awarded Marc Natan the inaugural Non-Ferrous Legend title for his leadership and advocacy in metal recycling. This honor recognizes over five decades of dedication to the industry.
As part of the BIR World Recycling Convention, the announcement took place during the Non-Ferrous Metals Division meeting on May 27 in Valencia, Spain. Additionally, the award for Natan as a legend in the non-ferrous realm formed a key moment of the broader World Recycling Convention & Exhibition.
Meanwhile, Paul Coyte, division president and CEO of Hayes Metals (New Zealand), introduced the award. According to Coyte, it serves as a tribute to industry figures who have shown extraordinary service, mentorship, and commitment. In particular, Natan, a towering presence in BIR since the 1970s, was praised for his institutional roles. Furthermore, he was recognized for his non-ferrous leadership that extended well beyond BIR itself.
In his acceptance speech, Natan expressed gratitude and pride. “I am delighted and very moved by this recognition,” he said, thanking peers and his family. His career includes leading France’s second-largest non-ferrous trading company and directing Europe’s top secondary copper smelter as a non-ferrous legend.

Marc Natan’s leadership reshaped the global conversation on non-ferrous recycling. As Non-Ferrous Division president (2001–2007), he launched the “Non-Ferrous Metals World Mirror.” This publication is now essential for traders and recyclers worldwide, highlighting his lasting non-ferrous impact.
He also served as a diplomatic voice, advocating for Algeria and Francophone North Africa within BIR. His ambassadorship helped integrate these regions into the broader market. Moreover, it aligned policies and trade interests with global standards, marking him as a non-ferrous legend.
