Marcegaglia Boosts French Steel Production with Advanced EAF Equipment from Danieli

Italy-based steelmaker Marcegaglia has signed an agreement with Danieli & C. S.p.A. for electric arc furnace (EAF) equipment at its Fos-sur-Mer plant in France. This move strengthens Marcegaglia’s plan to grow its presence in the European hot-rolled coil (HRC) market. The goal is to boost both production capacity and sustainability.

The flat-product minimill project has now entered its engineering phase. It will greatly increase output of low-emission carbon and stainless steel. The site is designed to support the company’s long-term growth through cleaner, more efficient production technologies.

Danieli will supply a fully automated EAF minimill. It will manage the entire steelmaking cycle, from scrap preparation to hot-strip rolling. The installation includes the Fastarc Zerobucket furnace, Tornado preheating system, and the Q-Melt adaptive control system.

These technologies will enhance production flexibility. At the same time, they significantly cut energy use and reduce harmful emissions. The equipment is engineered to meet the growing demand for low-emission steel in Europe.

When production begins in mid-2028, the plant will produce up to 2.1 million metric tons of HRC annually. About 30% of this output will go to Marcegaglia’s cold-rolling complex in Ravenna, Italy. This helps the company reduce logistics costs and ensure a stable raw material flow.

The plant will also include twin-ladle refining stations and twin-tank vacuum degassers. These features will help maintain metallurgical quality while minimizing environmental impact.

 

Sustainability and Efficiency Drive the EAF Equipment Upgrade

Sustainability is central to Marcegaglia’s investment strategy. Danieli’s EAF equipment includes features that lower carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions. These features help the plant meet strict EU environmental standards.

The Q-Melt system allows adaptive process control. It acts like an autopilot, adjusting settings in real time. This boosts throughput and keeps quality levels high across various steel grades.

Danieli has combined a Steckel mill and a hot-strip mill into one flexible layout. This innovation allows the plant to shift easily between carbon and stainless steel. The design cuts downtime and raises productivity.

As green steel demand grows across Europe, this setup provides a competitive edge. Key sectors like automotive and construction increasingly favor low-emission materials. Marcegaglia’s approach positions it to meet that demand quickly.

This flat-product minimill marks a strategic shift toward vertical integration. Marcegaglia secures a stable HRC supply while cutting emissions linked to blast furnace operations.
