Metalysis Scales Up Production of Refractory Alloys with 40 kW Spheroidiser Acquisition

Metalysis, 40 kW Spheroidiser Acquisition

New Technology to Enhance Production Capabilities and Market Position

Metalysis, a UK-based manufacturer specializing in solid-state metal and alloy powders, has taken a significant step toward expanding its production capacity by acquiring a 40 kW Tekna spheroidiser. This strategic acquisition is aimed at meeting the growing demand for high-performance powder metallurgy applications, including those in additive manufacturing (AM).

The 40 kW spheroidiser will enable Metalysis to enhance the production of refractory alloys, such as tantalum and high entropy alloys, while also setting the stage to cater to the high-temperature niobium market. This includes materials like niobium C103 and FS85, which are crucial in sectors such as aerospace and hypersonics.

Key Benefits of Spheroidiser Acquisition

Nitesh Shah, CEO of Metalysis, highlighted that this acquisition marks a crucial milestone for the company, allowing it to produce advanced powders in-house. The ability to control spheroidisation processes will not only reduce lead times but also mitigate risks associated with global supply chain disruptions. This capability is especially important for niche markets like refractory alloys and lightweight refractory high entropy alloys, which require precision and high quality.

Metalysis uses its proprietary FFC Cambridge electrolysis process to reduce metal oxides in a solid-state. This technique produces non-spherical powders with unique attributes needed for industries such as clean energy, semiconductor manufacturing, and space technology. By introducing spheroidisation in-house, the company can improve powder consistency, reduce waste, and optimize energy consumption, resulting in lower environmental impact compared to conventional atomisation methods.

With the new spheroidiser, Metalysis is positioning itself as a key player in the critical materials supply chain. This move allows the company to strengthen its market presence and offer high-quality, spheroidised powders tailored to the specific needs of its clients, particularly in high-value sectors.
