Kenmare Resources has confirmed that its Moma Titanium Mine in northern Mozambique remains operational despite widespread protests following the country’s controversial 9 October elections. While opposition parties dispute the election results, Kenmare assures stakeholders that its mining activities continue unaffected.
Protests and Political Tensions
The protests, which erupted after the announcement of Daniel Chapo’s victory in the presidential elections, were driven by claims of election fraud. Chapo, from the ruling Frelimo party, won with 71% of the vote, while opposition leader Venancio Mondlane received 20%. Mondlane called for nationwide protests, which have been met with a heavy security presence in an effort to restore order.
Despite the unrest, Kenmare Resources confirmed that the Moma Titanium Mine has not been disrupted by the protests. The company remains vigilant, monitoring the situation closely, and has implemented safety measures for its personnel and facilities. No evacuations have been necessary, and the senior management team remains on-site.
Moma Mine’s Role in Global Titanium Supply
The Moma Titanium Mine, located in Nampula province, is one of the world’s largest producers of heavy mineral concentrates, primarily focused on producing titanium feedstocks such as ilmenite. These raw materials are crucial for industries such as aerospace, automotive, and electronics manufacturing.
Kenmare’s ongoing operations at Moma ensure a steady supply of these essential minerals, vital to the global titanium industry. Despite the political unrest in Mozambique, production at the mine continues to meet the demands of international markets.
