Niobium-Based Battery Cells: Leclanché Unveils New Solution for Industrial and Heavy-Duty EV Applications
Leclanché Launches Niobium-Based XN50 Battery Cells for Heavy-Duty EVs: Swiss energy storage company Leclanché is introducing a new battery cell solution utilizing XNO, a niobium-based anode material developed by Echion Technologies. The XN50 battery cell will replace the existing lithium titanium oxide (LTO) cells, focusing on heavy-duty electric vehicles (EVs), rail, and marine applications.
Significant Advancements in Energy Density and Safety: The XN50 offers 50% higher energy density compared to LTO cells and can fast charge in under 10 minutes. These niobium-based cells are designed for enhanced safety and performance, even in extreme weather conditions. Leclanché’s new cells will complement its existing nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries.
Niobium’s Expanding Role in Battery Technology: Traditionally used in steel and defense, niobium is now key in battery technologies due to its high energy density. The XN50 is the first commercial battery cell to incorporate XNO, sourced from Brazilian producer CBMM. Echion has also partnered with Taiwanese manufacturer GUS Technology for heavy-duty EV battery production.
Growing Demand and Future Production Plans: With rising demand for niobium-based materials, Echion plans to open a 2,000 t/yr XNO manufacturing facility this year to supply major cell manufacturers. Additionally, the versatility of niobium is being explored in hydrogen fuel cell applications, presenting new opportunities in the energy market.
