Nucor Corp., a top US steelmaker, received Science-Based Emissions Targets (SBET) approval. This comes from the Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC). Nucor aims to reduce emissions by 2030. They focus on hot-rolled steel mills. SuperMetalPrice analyzes these ambitious goals. Nucor is a founding member of the GSCC. They will lower emissions across Scopes 1, 2, and 3.
Nucor’s Net-Zero Goals
Nucor set an interim 2030 target of 0.975 metric tons of CO2e per metric ton of steel. Their ultimate goal is net-zero emissions by 2050. They aim for 0.116 metric tons of CO2e per metric ton of steel. This makes them the first diversified US steelmaker with such targets.
Clean Energy and Innovative Technologies
Nucor already uses an EAF production process. This utilizes nearly 80% recycled steel. It produces one-third the emissions of traditional methods. They plan to increase clean electricity use. Carbon capture technologies will be implemented. Near-zero GHG iron-making methods are a focus. Natural gas and carbon-intensive materials will be reduced.
Industry Leadership and Global Standards
Greg Murphy, Nucor’s EVP, emphasized their commitment. They aim to produce low embodied carbon steel. The targets provide clarity to customers and investors. They align with global carbon reduction efforts. Nucor’s SBETs align with the Paris Agreement. The GSCC’s Steel Climate Standard is the global benchmark. It measures and reports steel carbon emissions.
Nucor’s Commitment to Sustainability
Nucor’s certification shows its dedication. They aim for sustainability and innovation. Their 2050 net-zero goal is ambitious. They reduce GHG emissions, increase recycled materials use, and lead in low-carbon steel production.
