Nuton Copper Processing Technology Drives First Production in Arizona

Rio Tinto achieved a major milestone as the first copper cathode emerged from the Johnson Camp mine using Nuton copper processing technology. This breakthrough marks the first commercial demonstration of Nuton’s proprietary bioleaching system, which Gunnison Copper deployed to enhance extraction from primary sulphide ores. The achievement signals a meaningful step toward cleaner, faster, and more efficient copper production in the United States.

The project now targets 30,000 tonnes of refined copper over four years through a dedicated heap-leach deployment. Meanwhile, Rio Tinto continues discussions with multiple U.S. partners to strengthen the domestic copper supply chain. The company sees Nuton as a catalyst for reshaping how the industry processes difficult sulphide ore bodies.

As a result, Nuton technology now stands out as one of the most advanced low-carbon extraction solutions available to U.S. miners. It integrates biology, chemistry, engineering, and digital tools into a modular, scalable platform suitable for varied mineral systems.

 

How Nuton Copper Processing Technology Streamlines Extraction and Cuts Emissions

Nuton copper processing technology uses engineered microbial cultures to accelerate oxidation within ore heaps. These microorganisms dissolve copper into solution, allowing the site to produce 99.99% pure copper cathode directly at the mine gate. This eliminates the need for traditional concentration, smelting, and refining, which typically raise both cost and carbon intensity.

The process can achieve recovery rates of up to 85% from primary sulphides, unlocking resources often considered uneconomic. Meanwhile, Nuton’s bioreactors cultivate microbes at scale, enhancing heat generation and leaching efficiency across the heap. This approach extends mine life and boosts revenue for both greenfield and brownfield assets.

 

Nuton Copper Processing Technology Supports Low-Carbon U.S. Copper Supply

The Johnson Camp mine now aims to deliver the lowest-carbon copper in the United States. Early results show a mine-to-metal carbon footprint of just 0.82kg CO₂e per kilogram of copper and water usage of 71 litres/kg. Gunnison Copper’s leadership emphasized the importance of this achievement for strengthening U.S. access to cleaner domestic copper. Rio Tinto expects the next phase to include multi-year testing and third-party verification as the technology scales to additional sites across the Americas.
