AI-Driven Spare Parts Management Transforms ÖBB Operations

Austria’s federal railway maintenance firm, ÖBB-Technical Services GmbH (ÖBB-TS), has signed a two-year enterprise agreement with Hamburg-based 3D Spark GmbH. This extends their successful collaboration on digital spare parts management. This move aims to fully integrate 3D Spark’s AI-powered platform into ÖBB’s Digital Warehouse and SAP systems. It will significantly enhance the procurement workflow for additively manufactured components.

ÖBB transports nearly 500 million passengers and 78 million tons of freight each year. Maintaining its vast fleet requires an extensive inventory of spare parts, many of which are outdated or unavailable. Previously, manual manufacturability analysis and part costing hindered efficiency. However, 3D Spark’s platform automated these processes, yielding an 80% boost in operational efficiency and major cost savings.

3D Spark Enables Automated Make-or-Buy Decisions and Smart Costing

A key benefit of the partnership is 3D Spark’s automated Make-or-Buy decision engine. This engine analyzes spare part data, provides live pricing, and integrates supplier quotes directly into procurement decisions. For ÖBB, this means faster, more confident sourcing and manufacturing choices.

According to Markus Goeberndorfer, Application Engineer at ÖBB, “The platform’s cost estimates were within 2–3% of our internal benchmarks. That trust has saved us 90% of manual effort.” This accuracy empowers engineers to act quickly and efficiently on complex procurement challenges.

Meanwhile, the new contract includes rail-specific AI models to assess 2D technical drawings. These models help ÖBB manage over 100,000 spare parts with precision. This level of automation supports ÖBB’s goals of sustainable, low-cost mobility. Moreover, it builds resilience across its supply chain.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:

ÖBB’s adoption of 3D Spark illustrates the growing role of AI and additive manufacturing in legacy industries like rail transport. As part availability and cost efficiency become critical, tools that integrate real-time supplier data and AI-driven analysis are reshaping industrial logistics. For the metals and manufacturing sector, this case sets a precedent: digital tools aren’t optional—they’re essential for optimizing inventories. They also play a role in cutting costs and ensuring resilience in critical infrastructure.
