Qarmet Scrap Processing Facility Enhances Steel Production

Kazakhstan’s Qarmet scrap processing facility began operations, handling up to 300 tons of raw materials daily. The site, located near Qarmet’s steel plant, streamlines logistics and reduces congestion at the main entrance. Automated processes and truck scales ensure accurate scrap accounting, while mobile reloaders and a 1,000-ton hydraulic press optimize material handling.

The facility processes 15–20 vehicles per day, converting scrap into briquettes for transport to the converter shop. Previously, scrap deliveries caused traffic issues at the coking shop. Placing the plant on the city outskirts, adjacent to the national highway, improves operational efficiency and safety while supporting higher production volumes.

Qarmet continues modernizing its steel operations. In October 2025, construction began on a hot-dip galvanizing and polymer coating complex, expected to launch in 2027. Belgian firm John Cockerill will supply equipment. Once completed, the facility will produce 844,000 tons of galvanized steel and 254,000 tons of polymer-coated products annually, expanding Qarmet’s product portfolio.
