The Reclaim project has introduced a portable, AI-powered robotic recycling plant designed to improve waste management, especially in remote areas. Funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 program, this innovation addresses the challenges of managing waste in areas with limited infrastructure or where waste generation temporarily surges.

 

Portable Recycling Plant for Remote Areas

The Reclaim plant uses multiple robots equipped with various types of pickers. These robots collect and sort materials based on their composition. AI-driven computer vision allows the robots to identify materials, maximizing sorting effectiveness.

The system’s compact design makes it easy to deploy in hard-to-reach areas like remote islands or regions with fluctuating populations. It enhances local material recovery efforts, promotes recycling, and supports a circular economy for plastics.

 

Aimplas: Leading the Technological Development

Aimplas, the Plastics Technology Centre in Spain, played a key role in the project. The organization helped define the operational needs of the plant, select the best technological components, and monitor the system’s performance to ensure the project’s objectives were met.

Javier Grau, a researcher at Aimplas, highlighted the versatility of the project. He said it could significantly benefit areas with seasonal population increases, such as tourist destinations or events like festivals and sports competitions. Additionally, the portable system could work alongside existing recycling plants in areas with high seasonal waste.

 

Revolutionizing Recycling with Compact, Portable Technology

The plant’s portability is one of its standout features. It fits into a transportable container, allowing for deployment in almost any location. This flexibility opens up new opportunities for recycling in areas with limited waste management infrastructure.

The Reclaim project also addresses emerging recycling challenges, including the increasing presence of bioplastics. Traditional recycling streams struggle with these materials, but the Reclaim system can process them effectively.

The Reclaim project will help improve waste management, especially in Europe. By combining AI and robotics, it enhances material recovery rates and supports sustainable recycling practices. The system is also valuable for marine waste management, bioplastics recovery, and waste management during peak tourist seasons. The project contributes to a more sustainable circular economy.
