Redwood and Lime Partner to Recycle E-Bike and Scooter Batteries
Redwood Materials has announced a new partnership with Lime Micromobility to recycle medium-format lithium-ion batteries. These batteries, commonly used in e-bikes and scooters, represent a growing waste stream that demands responsible end-of-life solutions. This partnership reflects a rising need for sustainable battery recycling as urban mobility trends shift toward electrification.
As battery use expands, Redwood focuses on building a circular battery supply chain. The Nevada-based company has already partnered with key micromobility leaders, including Lyft, Rad Power Bikes, and Specialized, to recycle batteries powering electric scooters and bikes. By collaborating with Lime, Redwood aims to close the loop on critical minerals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel—reducing waste and reclaiming over 95% of valuable materials.
Recycled Batteries Support Electrification and Safety Standards
Redwood emphasizes that medium-format lithium-ion batteries are vital to the future of electric transportation. These batteries, ranging from 300 to 1,000 watt-hours, are larger than those in smartphones but smaller than electric vehicle packs. Their high energy density makes safe handling essential. Improper disposal of such batteries can cause fire hazards and environmental damage.
To combat this, Redwood uses advanced techniques to recover battery materials while meeting strict safety regulations for storage, transport, and processing. The company’s recycling process reintegrates recovered metals into the battery supply chain. This method reduces dependence on newly mined resources and supports a more sustainable battery industry.
Redwood continues to expand its reach through consumer collection initiatives and partnerships with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The company also collaborates with policymakers to create easy drop-off programs, host local battery collection events, and educate the public about recycling.
Recent data underscores the importance of Redwood’s mission. According to People for Bikes, e-bikes led bicycle industry growth from 2019 to 2023, driving 63% of all sales gains. Meanwhile, the North American Bikeshare and Scootershare Association (NABSA) reports that 64% of shared rides in 2023 were on electric vehicles.
Redwood’s growing partnerships set an industry benchmark in battery recycling. With Lime and other mobility leaders on board, Redwood is paving the way for a greener, safer, and more responsible approach to battery use and disposal.
