REEPRODUCE Project Showcases Intelligent Sorting Machine for Enhanced Recycling

Advanced Sorting Technology in Action
The REEPRODUCE project has made significant strides with the introduction of the semi-mobile Intelligent Sorting Machine (ISM) developed by Sense2Sort, utilizing advanced Vision, AI, and X-Ray Transmission (XRT) technologies. As the project progresses into its second phase, various partners have commenced demonstration activities focused on validating and optimizing recycling processes for devices containing Neodymium (Nd) permanent magnets.

Streamlining Recycling Processes
This validation effort aims to enhance the efficiency of detecting Nd magnets within a diverse array of electronic devices, ultimately streamlining the recycling workflow. The REEPRODUCE initiative represents a pivotal move toward establishing a comprehensive closed-loop recycling process for permanent magnets, which is essential for promoting sustainable resource management.

Successful Demonstration in Spain
Last year, the first demonstration took place at Indumetal Recycling in Spain, a leader in the recycling of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) based in the Basque Country. The semi-mobile sorting system was shipped to their facility, where a series of validation and optimization tests were conducted. The mobile sorting system is designed to be deployed at various recycling yards, allowing for on-site testing and immediate refinements based on real-time data.

Upcoming Validation in Norway
This year, the project is set to continue with another demonstration at REVAC in Norway. REVAC stands out as one of Scandinavia’s largest recyclers of WEEE, processing an impressive 70% of the post-consumer electronic waste in Norway. Their state-of-the-art facility adheres to all current Best Available Technologies (BAT) and Reference Documents (BREFs) regulations, ensuring compliance and efficiency.

The sorting system at REVAC will employ AI-driven, sensor-based technology to accurately identify end-of-life (EoL) devices within electronic waste. As part of this initiative, a comprehensive database is also being established to collect crucial information regarding the devices processed.

Collaboration for Sustainable Solutions
Within the framework of REEPRODUCE, REVAC is actively involved in identifying Nd-based magnets in HVAC compressors and providing samples for further analysis. This collaboration enhances the project’s overall goal of improving the recovery and recycling of Nd magnets, contributing to a more efficient and sustainable use of resources.

The REEPRODUCE project has been made possible through the support of the European Union Grant Agreement No. 101057733. However, the views expressed in this article are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the European Union or its agencies.
