Sigma Lithium, a leading Canadian producer of lithium, has successfully obtained a triple environmental licence for its Barreiro mine in Brazil, securing a critical supply of spodumene ore for its Greentech Industrial Plant. The new licenses, which include Licença Operacional (LO), Licença Prévia (LP), and Licença de Instalação (LI), mark a significant step in the company’s expansion and long-term strategy to meet growing demand in the electric vehicle (EV) battery market.
Triple Environmental Licence Granted After Rigorous Review
The three licenses were granted by the Chamber of Mining Activities in Minas Gerais, following a unanimous vote that included approvals from non-governmental organization (NGO) representatives. The process entailed an in-depth review of environmental and social standards, ensuring compliance with Brazil’s rigorous regulatory framework. Sigma Lithium’s proactive approach to community engagement and social investment played a key role in the approval.
Sigma Lithium’s CEO, Ana Cabral, highlighted that the approval provides the company with a strong regulatory foundation for future operations at Barreiro, allowing the company to secure a steady supply of lithium feedstock for its Greentech beneficiation plant. She emphasized the company’s commitment to responsible and sustainable mining practices, which is integral to its operations.
Future Mining at Barreiro Secured for Long-Term Supply
Although current production at Grota do Cirilo, Sigma Lithium’s main operating site, does not necessitate immediate mining at Barreiro, the approval ensures that the mine is ready for future integration. This strategic move is aligned with the company’s long-term growth plans and its financing arrangement with the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES), which provided a 16-year term loan for development. The Barreiro mine is expected to play a key role in increasing production capacity for lithium concentrate, which is essential for the production of lithium-ion batteries used in EVs and other renewable energy applications.
Social Investments and Local Community Engagement
In line with its focus on sustainability, Sigma Lithium has already begun social investment initiatives in surrounding communities, including Araçuai and Itinga. These initiatives are designed to benefit local populations and support their integration into the company’s development plans. Notably, the company has funded the construction of educational infrastructure such as a school and a childcare facility. Additionally, partnerships with local NGOs have helped create after-school programs aimed at providing educational and cultural enrichment for children in the region.
Sustainable Mining Practices and Expanding Production
Sigma Lithium’s Grota do Cirilo operations, located within the electric vehicle battery materials supply chain, are designed with an emphasis on sustainability. The Greentech beneficiation plant employs advanced techniques to minimize environmental impact, such as eliminating the use of potable water, toxic chemicals, and tailings dams. Phase 1 of the plant commenced in Q2 2023, and with the approval of Phase 2, Sigma Lithium is set to double its production capacity to 520,000 tonnes of lithium concentrate annually, further solidifying its position as a major supplier in the growing global lithium market.
