Speira Invests in New Aluminum Melting Furnace for Increased Capacity and Sustainability

Speira, Aluminum Melting Furnace

New Furnace Boosts Capacity and Efficiency
Speira GmbH, a leading producer of recycled-content aluminum alloys, has commissioned a cutting-edge melting furnace at its Hamburg headquarters. This new 60 tons-per-batch furnace, which replaces a furnace from the 1970s, significantly enhances the company’s production capacity by an additional 7,500 tons annually. Speira has invested €6.4 million ($6.7 million) in the upgrade, which not only boosts output but also contributes to the company’s ongoing efforts to improve energy efficiency. According to Speira, the new furnace reduces energy consumption by 15%, aligning with the company’s broader sustainability goals.

Innovative Technology for Process Transparency and CO2 Reduction
The furnace incorporates advanced technology, including an electromagnetic stirrer and updated burner systems, designed to optimize energy usage and lower CO2 emissions. The new system’s enhanced energy efficiency is a key part of Speira’s strategy to reduce the environmental impact of its operations. The company states that these innovations play a crucial role in helping Speira meet its sustainability targets, including its broader goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 1.5 million tons annually across its facilities.

In addition to energy savings, the furnace features “transparent” design elements that utilize sensors and cameras to provide real-time monitoring of furnace processes. This innovative technology allows Speira to collect valuable data, enabling continuous optimization of burner controls and better adaptation to the specific mix of scrap and primary aluminum used in production. This real-time insight allows Speira to fine-tune operations for greater efficiency, ensuring both environmental and economic benefits.

Commitment to Sustainability and Future Investments
This new furnace at Hamburg is part of Speira’s ongoing efforts to enhance sustainability across its network of aluminum production and recycling sites. In addition to the Hamburg plant, Speira has plans to invest more than $11 million in new furnaces at its Grevenbroich and Töging facilities in Germany, further expanding its capacity for recycling metals. With these upgrades, Speira continues to push the boundaries of sustainable aluminum production while increasing its recycling potential. Speira’s total aluminum recycling capacity is set to rise to 650,000 tons per year, with an overall output of about 1 million tons of rolled products.
