SPR Launches First Automated Bifacial Solar Panel Recycling Line in the U.S. to Meet Growing Demand

SPR, automated bifacial solar panel recycling line

SolarPanelRecycling.com (SPR) has launched the first automated bifacial solar panel recycling line in the United States. Essentially, this marks a pivotal advancement in solar module recycling. The facility, in Salisbury, North Carolina, efficiently separates glass from bifacial panels, achieving 99% or higher recovery rates. Thus, SPR sets a new industry benchmark for eco-friendly, high-efficiency solar panel recycling.

Bifacial Modules Drive Industry Shift

Initially, monofacial panels dominated the solar sector. However, bifacial panels are rapidly gaining traction, particularly in utility-scale projects, due to their superior energy efficiency. Indeed, IEA forecasts indicate bifacial modules will capture over 70% of the market by 2033. Consequently, specialized recycling solutions are increasingly necessary. Damaged panels from transport, installation, or weather events highlight the need for tailored recycling.

Sustainability and Efficiency at Core

Furthermore, SPR’s CEO, Brett C. Henderson, emphasizes the company’s commitment to solar energy sustainability. Specifically, SPR’s technology ensures clean separation of materials—glass, silicon, metals, and plastics—for reuse in manufacturing. Accordingly, this maximizes recovery and minimizes waste, bolstering the solar industry’s environmental goals.

Addressing Recycling Inefficiencies

To illustrate, SPR identified inefficiencies in monofacial recycling lines, particularly in glass recovery and manual labor. Therefore, SPR’s R&D teams developed the automated bifacial recycling line. Effectively, unlike partial recyclers that shred and mix materials, SPR’s technology cleanly separates components. Ultimately, this allows for reintroduction into manufacturing, creating value and reducing environmental impact. SuperMetalPrice reports that this new technology will be a game changer for the solar recycling industry.
