Steel Dynamics Inc. (SDI), a leading U.S. operator of recycled-content electric arc furnace (EAF) mills, reported a significant drop in its net income for the fourth quarter of 2024, impacted by rising steel imports and market pricing pressures. Despite challenges, SDI remains optimistic about the future, anticipating improved market conditions in 2025.
Q4 2024 Financial Performance and Steel Import Challenges
Steel Dynamics’ net income for Q4 2024 fell to $207 million, or $1.36 per diluted share. This marked a nearly 50% decline compared to the same period last year, and a more than 30% drop from the prior quarter. The company’s fourth-quarter sales totaled $3.9 billion, and full-year sales reached $17.5 billion, down 6.5% from 2023.
Despite the profit decline, CEO Mark D. Millett highlighted SDI’s ability to generate strong cash flow, with operating cash flow for 2024 at $1.8 billion and liquidity at $2.2 billion. The company achieved near-record annual steel shipments of 12.7 million tons and strong operating income of $1.6 billion, despite a challenging pricing environment. However, rising steel imports, particularly of coated flat-rolled steels, put downward pressure on pricing and disrupted the supply-demand balance.
In 2024, U.S. steel imports totaled 29.1 million tons, up 3.5% from the previous year. SDI expects a reduction in unfairly traded steel imports in 2025, driven by ongoing trade actions and a positive commercial environment fueled by rising demand for domestic steel.
Positive Outlook for 2025 Amid Stable Steel Demand
Looking ahead, SDI sees potential for growth in 2025. The company anticipates steady steel demand from sectors like construction, automotive, industrial, and energy, along with a positive outlook for flat-rolled steel orders. Steel pricing has stabilized, and customer optimism remains solid.
Millett also noted growing demand for lower-carbon emission U.S.-produced steel and the continued reshoring of manufacturing businesses. The company’s diversification into aluminum production is another key growth strategy, with its Aluminum Dynamics plant in Mississippi ramping up production in early 2025. SDI aims to produce aluminum flat-rolled products for sustainable markets, including the beverage can and packaging industries.
