Vattenfall, a Swedish renewable energy company, has given the green light to the 1.6GW Nordlicht offshore wind cluster in Germany. This marks a key milestone in Germany’s energy transition and sustainability efforts.
Nordlicht Wind Farms Set to Power Germany’s Future
The Nordlicht offshore wind cluster consists of two projects: Nordlicht 1 and Nordlicht 2. Together, they will generate over 1.6GW of capacity. Once fully operational, the project will produce about 6 terawatt-hours (TWh) of renewable energy annually. Construction will start next year, and the goal is to complete it by 2028.
Helene Biström, Head of Vattenfall’s Business Area Wind, emphasized that the project will drive Germany’s energy transition. It will help decarbonize industry and ensure a reliable supply of clean energy. This initiative supports Vattenfall’s broader goal of achieving “fossil freedom.”
Location and Capacity Details of the Nordlicht Cluster
The Nordlicht wind cluster is located 85 kilometers north of Borkum Island in the German North Sea. The project features two sites: Nordlicht 1, with a capacity of 980MW, and Nordlicht 2, at 630MW. Once operational, Nordlicht 1 will become Germany’s largest offshore wind farm. This will boost the country’s renewable energy output.
Nordlicht 2’s development depends on acquiring the necessary permits. Vattenfall is working to secure these permits to keep the project on track.
BASF and Vattenfall Partnership Strengthens the Green Energy Shift
BASF, a major chemical company, has secured a long-term renewable electricity supply from Vattenfall. This agreement ensures BASF’s chemical production across Europe will run on clean energy from the Nordlicht wind farms. Vattenfall also plans to repurchase BASF’s shares in the Nordlicht project, reinforcing their ongoing partnership.
Sustainable Construction and Carbon Reduction Goals
Vattenfall is committed to sustainability. The Nordlicht project will use towers for the wind turbines made with low-emission steel. This will reduce the overall carbon footprint of the project by 16%. This approach aligns with Vattenfall’s environmental goals.
DEME Secures Contract for Nordlicht Wind Farm Foundations
DEME, a global leader in offshore construction, has won a €300 million contract for the Nordlicht wind farms. The company will transport and install 112 foundations for the wind farms. This is another important milestone in the project’s development.
The Nordlicht offshore wind farms will be a game-changer for Germany’s renewable energy landscape. They will provide clean energy to both industry and households, driving innovation and sustainability in the sector.
